Light Art Series: Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House in Ohio

Frank Lloyd Wright once said,

"More and more, so it seems to me that light is the beautifier of the building."

Light Art Series | Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House in Ohio

As a photographer of everything Frank Lloyd Wright, I love this quote. It's the first three words that are the most impactful, 'more and more'.

There's no denying that Wright understood light, but those three words tell us that he not only understood light, he studied it. And if you walk into any Frank Lloyd Wright design around the world you can't help but notice, he was a master of it.

As I was photographing the Westcott House in Ohio for my project (#500fllwproject timeline) I was lucky enough to stumble upon some of Wright's Light Art.

Light Art happens when direct sunlight interacts with Wright's window designs, or what we call his Art Glass, and creates interesting shapes as the passage of time moves it across a floor or wall.

Watch how the light moves and stretches with time.

These are usually fleeting moments that never last more than a few minutes, but I wondered if I could capture these 'Light Shapes' for longer than just a moment, so I set up a time lapse. This is 35 minutes of those fleeting moments we see wrapped up in 30 seconds.

The natural light is beaming in and out of fast moving clouds, through large trees, and finally through Wright's Art Glass. I was hypnotized watching this play out in front of me.

So what do you think? Did Wright know this 'Light Show' would play out on the front landing of the Westcott House?
